Somers Point is a Charming Bay Village and a Secret Jewel of the Jersey Shore

Somers Point, located ten miles southwest of Atlantic City and about thirty miles north of Cape May, is one of the best kept secrets on the Jersey Shore. Those who know this lovely town on the Great Egg Harbor Bay appreciate it for its laid back ambience and enjoy its beautiful sunsets over the bay from Kennedy Park. This close the ocean, but still protected location made Somers Point an important center for shipbuilding and fishing. The shipbuilding industry is gone, but fishing is still king around here.

The town's annual BayFest, held every spring, is one of the best seafood festivals you could ever hope to find. This all day party (the beer starts flowing at about 9:00) has followers who come back every year, no matter where they are living now.

The annual "Good Old Days" Festival picks up the other end of summer, and each September, this great festival has a little something for everyone: childrens' activities, car shows and lots of music and lots of food.

In between, the Day at the Bay focuses on the important water attributes of this area, with scull and lifeguard races, sailboat excursions and nature trips. Many of the historic buildings of the Bay District, such as the Anchorage Tavern, Old City Hall (which is now used as the town library), Gregory's, Charlie's and the Point Pub (now Tucker's Steak House) are maintained in their original style, keeping the Bay District a real life historic center.

Bay Avenue is lined with marinas with both private boats and boats that can be chartered for a day's fishing. But you don't have to have a big boat or spend a fortune chartering one to have a great day on the water. The town has public boat ramps, a protected beach and a municipal pier.

Bay Avenue is also lined with great restaurants that take full advantage of the beautiful bay surrounding Somers Point. A favorite outing for many Jerseyites is a hectic day or two in Atlantic City, followed by a couple of relaxing days in this charming bay town.
