One of the top things visitors to the Shore want are the great seafood restaurants of the area. There are seafood restaurants everywhere; I'm sure you can get a shrimp or lobster dinner in Kansas City. But can you have fish that was caught that afternoon? The fine restaurants on the Jersey Shore pride themselves on the quality of the seafood they serve, in addition to the imaginative ways they serve it.
The Cape May fishing tradition is still alive and well, and one of the best spots in Cape May to sample its fresh fish is the Lobster House. Many people consider it a Jersey Shore tradition, and wouldn't dream of visiting Cape May without a visit to the Lobster House. It is truly an institution, feeding Cape May residents and visitors for four generations! During the summer season, there is a long wait since it is so popular. Dockside dining or even out on a boat tied to the dock is a great waterside experience that everybody wants, so even though they have five dining rooms, be ready to wait, since they do not take reservations. Most people are prepared for the wait, and just stroll the docks and soak up the nautical atmosphere and build up an appetite while they wait. The extensive menu, from raw bar items to the famous Fisherman's Wharf Platter, overflowing with crabmeat stuffed lobster, flounder, scallops, crabs and shrimp, will take care of any appetite.
Not to be outdone by Cape May, Atlantic City's Docks Oyster House boasts being around since 1897. They have clearly learned how to prepare seafood in all that time, so leave the casino buffets for a while and tuck into some fabulous seafood. There is a lot of competition for good restaurants such as Fin or the Palm at the Casinos, but there is a big local seafood industry, and you can get the catch of the day at Docks or at Harry's Oyster Bar.
Peter Shields in Cape May is known for its elegance and overall fine dining, but if it is lobster you crave, their lobster salad is the true standard. Sweet, large chunks of the best and freshest lobster you can get, outside of Maine! And of course, the Lobster House is there for you if you prefer a more casual atmosphere. Hemingway's Steak and Seafood and the Pier House round out the offerings in this seaside seafood town.
