Choosing the Best Beaches at the Jersey Shore is kind of like picking art. Everyone knows what they like, but everyone likes something different. Of course, for most beaches, it depends on the stage of life that you are currently in. Let's face it, in your twenties, you really only want to know about which beaches have the hottest chicks or dudes on them.
Great surfing beaches,
great volleyball beaches,
beaches with bars right on the water like
Jenks
or
Martell's
in Point Pleasant is where you want to be. Once you have found that special someone, you may decide to steer clear of the sandy meat markets and find beaches that are tailor made for long strolls
(Spring Lake),
empty stretches
(Sandy Hook)
or romantic restaurants
(Cape May).
Fast forward a few years and you are more likely to be looking for a beach that has gentle waves and protected areas where your little toddlers can play safely, where you can pack a lunch or find a reasonably priced snack stand.  "
Spring Lake,
for instance, doesn't allow food or drink on the beach, so you can't bring your cooler to dive into at lunch time. You can leave it up on the boardwalk and go have your lunch on a bench, but what fun is a sandwich at the beach with no sand in it? You do have to keep a bit of an eye on your cooler if you leave it, but Spring Lake is a notoriously safe town. At this stage of life, too, you may want to avoid the beaches where the teens roam, throwing frisbees and footballs, for fear they'll trip over your three year old.

take top awards for the beaches that families with young children prefer.
Ah, but what about when you have reached the stage when your kids have to be entertained 24/7?
Nonstop action beaches such as
Seaside
or
Wildwood
will keep the little devils out of trouble and give you time to soak up the sun. But if you like the water parks as much as your kids, nobody can stop you from joining them. How about a beach that lets the kids go crazy in the water park while the grownups relax nearby in a cabana setting? Just check out
Seaside Heights
for this ideal layout. And ladies, if you were able to drag hubby down to the beach, let him deal with the kids and you can catch up on some much needed shopping if you go to the beaches that are near the
outlets.
Nobody will notice you are missing if you drop them off and save them parking and dragging the beach gear a few blocks. And sooner or later, we all reach the stage where our idea of the best beaches are the ones where we can just sit under the beach umbrella with a good book, gazing at the sun dappling on the water and thinking about nothing much. Of course, every beach on the Jersey Shore is great for the sweet doing of nothing, but teens diving after footballs, or a nearby volley ball crowd cheering can cut into our meditation time.
More staid beaches such as
Spring Lake,
Avon,
Bradley,
and
Wildwood Crest
would probably fit the bill. These towns have almost seemed to go out of their ways to be the antithesis of their noisy neighbors,
Belmar,
Asbury Park,
and
Wildwood.
