Barnegat Light Has a Lot to Offer the Visitor, Not Just the Famous "Old Barney"
With a population with just a little under 700 annual residents, Barnegat Light is one of the quieter of the boroughs on Long Beach Island. Of course, as with most of the summer enclaves on LBI, in the summer months the population can rise into several thousands of visitors.
This small part of LBI is heavily trafficked by fishing boats and tours. Water tourist attractions include: crabbing, fishing, deep sea fishing, and boat rides, which are available for $5.00 per person. There are several charter boats with different hours of operation throughout the day.
The most popular hot spot on the island is, of course the famous Lighthouse;
this wonder stands 172 feet above sea level and has 217 steps to the top of “Old Barney”. The view from the top can also be witnessed from the bottom level on a monitor. This is a great feature for those who cannot make it to the actual top due to a handicap or are just too tired from a day at the beach. However, people with disabilities can still make it partially up on special ramps. This magnificent lighthouse has recently had to be reinforced with jetties due to past erosion problems from uncontrollable weather conditions. This wonderful attraction can be viewed for just $1 per person.
This is one town that has some of the most exquisite seafood restaurants on the eastern coast of New Jersey, due to the local fishing fleet. The food is caught and prepared by the locals fresh daily. Just check out the
extensive list of restaurants on LBI.
Night life is a bit on the quiet side, but you can also travel to nearby boroughs, such as
Surf City
or
Beach Haven
to experience all the fun that the island has to offer.
Daytime fun in Barnegat Light is plentiful at the beach and is accessible from any side street. Beach badges can be obtained for seasonal use down to daily use for a fee. Bathrooms are available in designated areas and these also contain showers, which makes it great for daytrippers. Handicap parking is scattered throughout the area usually found at the ends of the streets along the beach.
Barnegat Light, like all of the rest of the great towns on Long Beach Island is a wonderful place to own a summer home, rent one for a few weeks summer vacation, or just come down to spend the day. There is such a lot to do, that it is guaranteed to be a very full day.
